Generation Saviour Association Wrote to Deputy Chief Minister

SAS Nagar, July 16 (Bureau) Administration took action against Sohi Banquet Hall, Zikarpur for serving hukkah during a wedding ceremony. NGO Generation Saviour Association, which is campaigning for tobacco control in Punjab, came to know that Sohi Banquet Hall has been served hukkah during the marriage on 28 February, 2016, which is prohibited under various Acts. The Association wrote a letter to Deputy Chief Minister to look into the issue. A special team of Health Department visited the banquet hall and warned them. On the other side Municipal Corporation and Department of Excise and Taxation issued the notice to the banquet hall regarding the same. Hukkah Bars had been banned under the section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code by the administration. Serving of hukkah is a serious violation of Poison Act, 1919, Drug and Cosmetic Act, 1940, FSSAI, 2006 and COTPA, 2003.
Ms. Opinder Preet Kaur, President, Generation Saviour Association said that when she came to know that hukkah’s are being served during the wedding ceremony on 28-Febrary, 2016 at Sohi Banquet Hall. She wrote a complaint to Deputy Chief Minister S. Sukhbir Singh Badal along with Photographs of the violation as the evidence after that the complaint was forwarded to Deputy Commissioner, Mohali for further action. Deputy Commissioner wrote the concerned department to take strict action against the violators. A team of Health department visited the venue and checked the violations. Department of Excise and taxation and Municipal Council, Zirakpur has been issued notice to the Sohi Banquet Hall and insured to take necessary action. The Association received a letter from Complaint and Investigation Branch of Deputy Commissioner Office and an action taken report enclosed with it.

Ms. Kaur said that it became a trend to book hukkah during the wedding and other functions.
