MC in association with NGOs & RWAs organized massive cleanliness drive across city under “Swachh Bharat Mission”


 Chandigarh, October 2:- To commemorate the second anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission, The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has organized massive cleanliness drive in association with the NGO Sant Nirankari Mandal, Allen Institute & RWAs/MWAs (Resident Welfare Associations & Market Welfare Associations) across the city today on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

Nearly 12 thousand were deputed throughout the city, who cleaned all the parks, streets, road berms, nullahs & Markets etc. throughout the city including 6 thousand employees of MC, 5 thousand volunteers of Sant Nirankari Mandal, students of Allen institute and hundreds of office bearers of Resident Welfare Associations of different sectors.

Sh. Arun Sood, Mayor of Chandigarh and Sh. B. Purushartha, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh launched the drive at Nullah nearby Fragrance Garden, Sector 36, Chandigarh at 9.00 a.m., where all the surrounding areas have been cleaned alongwith toilet blocks in the Market. The volunteers of Sant Nirankari Mandal and students of Allen also joined the MC teams to clean the Nullah, near the Park.

While addressing the gathering the Mayor said that every citizen will have to join this kind of drives with the Municipal Corporation and keep their surroundings neat and clean. He said that this type of special sanitation drives creates awareness among the people regarding sustainable development and importance of green cover in the society.

Sh. Manoj Khatri & Sh. Virender Chaudhary, Joint Commissioners, Sh. N.P. Sharma, Chief Engineer, Dr. P.S. Bhatti, Medical Officer of Health, all concerned officers of MC and Secretary, Sant Nirankari Charitable Foundation Sh. C.L. Gulati and Smt. Joginder Kaur, member incharge branch admn. in North India came specially from mission headquarters Delhi to become a part of the drive, for its successful accomplishment.

Throughout the day total 52 locations have been cleaned including minimum two locations in each ward. Each location of ward has been supervised by the Sanitary Inspector, Chief Sanitary Inspector and Health Supervisor. Total 65 Tractor Trolleys, 18 Tractor with shrub masters, 49 Dumper Placers, 25 Bush Cutters, 5 JCBs, 5 Tippers, 4 Front End Loaders and 2 no. Boom ladders were put on use.

During the drive, the volunteers of NGO and employees of MC removed malba, garbage& horticulture waste, from open areas, back lanes, and cleaned open drains, parking areas, parks, choes “Nullahs” and civil dispensaries under the jurisdiction of MC, Chandigarh.

The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has deployed all its manpower including engineering wing, sanitation wing, equipments and machinery. During the drive awareness has also been created among citizens about sanitation and cleanliness and bring a behavior change in the people regarding healthy sanitation practice through banners, hoardings and short movies were shown through big LED screen mounted in mobile van.
